In many families, parents share the responsibilities of putting meals on the table for the family. They use old family recipes and try out new ones as well. Summer barbecues are stand-out hits when dad is yielding the spatula. Mostly, Mom rules the kitchen, though.

Going away to school, or getting married, does not have to be the end of good cooking. Blended families just have twice as many favorites to choose from now. Regardless of who does the meal preparations, there will be a new-to-you-both recipe or two to try out, along the way.

Before you fly from the nest, write down some of your very most favorite instructions for cooked dishes. Putting them in a small photo album might be an easy way to keep track of them. Mom is the greatest cook, but you could follow in her footsteps with enough practice.

Sometimes opening a can of something may be a quick way to prepare a meal. Using your mom’s own delicious concoctions can wait until the weekend, when you have more time. You can even come up with some of your own favorites by trying a recipe from cook books.

Thinking about a trip back home for a visit often puts into your mind visions of fragrant stews, chocolate cakes and peanut butter cookies. You can just taste them all. The house will have fragrances as you enter that will tickle your taste buds.

Making little changes to mom’s recipes can often create other favorites, too. Whether you are at school or in your own happy home with a spouse, you may find that cooking at home is a lot less expensive than running to the fast-food shops every day. Not only will this save you money, it will possibly keep you healthier. A visit there once in a while is alright, for a treat.
